Homemade Yoga Mat Cleaner

Did you resolve to hit the mat more this year or commit to trying yoga for the first time in 2020?  Whether you are an expert yogi or new to the practice, one basic but necessary tool needed before you enter downward dog is a go-to cleaner for your mat.  Going to a studio for an instructor led yoga class can be an invigorating experience, but thinking about the germs your mat can pick-up within the shared space is sure to give you monkey mind while in meditation.  Aviod the distraction and breathe easier knowing that at the end of the class you can clean up with your own hoademade yoga mat spray.  Aside from the fresh and clean feeling, when you make your own cleaner, you get the added bonus of personalizing your scent.  Follow the recipe below to prepare your cleaner before your next class and enhance the post shavasana clean-up ritual with a little aroma therapy.

Tools and Ingredients

1 Spray Bottle

3 Parts Distilled Water

1 Part Witch Hazel

Your Choice of Nature’s Oil Essential Oils (Tea Tree or Eucalyptus)

Your Choice of Nature’s Oil Premium Fragrance Oils

Directions

Combine the distilled water and witch hazel together in your spray bottle leaving room for the oils.  Next pick an essential oil such as tea tree or eucalyptus as a base for your cleaner.  These two oils kill bacteria and viruses as well as fight fungi.  They work well with the witch hazel which is a natural astringent.   Add 7 – 15 drops of the essential oil depending on the size of your bottle and then pick your desired fragrance oil.  For an uplifting earthy blend, we recommend adding Nature’s Oil Teakwood fragrance to a tea tree and eucalyptus blend (7 – 15 drops of each depending on size of bottle and desired aroma).  Place the cap on your bottle and shake!  Mist the air to test your cleaning concoction and add more oils if desired.

When you go to clean your mat, we recommend using a damp towel to work-in and wipe away the spray.  Another grounding and sophisticated blend is Nature’s Oil Cedar Leather, Fern and Champaca fragrance oils combined with peppermint and tea tree essential oils.  You can get creative with the blends and add citrus or floral notes, woodsy or even tropical undertones depending on where you want to be transported during your clean-up experience!

Share your blends with us on social media!  Namaste from Nature’s Oil.
